Newark's Ski Bum ski store hooked me up with a warm neck gaiter and athletic long johns--the two cold-weather clothing items I most needed as I continue forward into the colder days and nights that await. Owner Duane (charcoal t-shirt) reminds me more of my younger brother, Ryan, than anyone I've ever met. Staff is awesome here--very helpful too. One of them (Dave) even invited me to his wedding this weekend!!) Thanks very much, Guys!!!

The facial expressions, mannerisms, posture, and general energy of Ski Bum owner Duane Allen (dark t-shirt) reminds me of my brother, Ryan Throop, more than anyone else ever has. Duane treated me like a brother too. I was needing a neck gaiter and full leg thermals for the oncoming cold weather, and Duane made sure I had both. I really enjoyed meeting him and his awesome staff– one of whom–Dave, even invited me to his wedding this weekend!!
Thanks so much guys!!!

Reaching America’s First State on Foot!

I reached America's very first state this afternoon. It will be the least amount of miles I've walked of any of the 15 previous states I've walked across, and I'm still determined to make the most of the few days that I'm privileged to be given to walk this northern section of Delaware!!

North East, Maryland

Yesterday was the fourth day this week in which I had to walk into the day not knowing if I would have a host at day's end, in Cecil County. I had a few Couchsurfing requests out there, and one called! JP not only invited me to spend the night with roommates and friends, he also treated me to dinner at a local healthy restaurant. His story is fascinating--he works for Gore & Associates, Inc., makers of Gore-Tex, Glide dental floss, etc., as an engineer. In JP's words: "they pay me to make about a ton of dental floss a day." The more I meet people like JP, the more enthusiastic I find myself about the most recent crop of young adults :)
